Smart application service overview

Taiwan Intelligent Fiber Optic Network (TAIFO) was founded in 2011 as a subsidiary of Tai Tung Comm. Co., Ltd, one of Taiwan’s best cable manufacturer, who is also the country’s largest fiber optic cable manufacturer. As a testament to the quality of its staff and product, TAIFO attracted international conglomerate Foxconn as an investor in just two short years. The involvement of Foxconn arguably boosted the company’s reputation, one that is still going strong with its impeccable solutions.

Aside from its successful domestic internet solution that is the city wide all fiber optic high speed network, implemented within Taipei city since 2013, the company also has technical construction solutions that could be implemented internationally. The locally patented craftsmanship of the company’s installment of wires are immensely helpful for developing countries looking to increase citywide internet speed while aiming to construct presentable cityscapes to attract foreign visitors.

Fiber Optic High Speed Network is a Large Step toward Becoming a Smart City

_埋管In our tech-driven world today, nothing is more important than the internet, the backbone and foundation of all of our personal gadgets and modern smart appliances. Aside from items like the common smartphone that enables us to surf for information or get entertained with only a few strokes of our fingers, household appliances have also started to receive internet integration in the last decade. From screen monitors to interactive fridges that never cease to entertain users when working in the kitchen, internet capability in electronics has gone from an indulging accessory to a must-have necessity. As such, the ability to power multiple devices at high internet speed has become a very important factor when selecting internet carriers.

Currently, among the various kinds of data transmission, none is faster than fiber optic communication. The technology has proven to be the preference over traditional electric cabling because it has the ability to outperform the conventional solutions when considering high bandwidth, long distance, and immunity to electromagnetic interference. Moreover, fiber optic could reach over the speed of 100 petabit per second.

As fiber optic solutions transmit data from one end to another by sending pulses of light, forming modulated electromagnetic carrier waves, through fiber optics cables, the technology can better transmit voice, video, through local area networks and across long distances.

The benefits and convenience of fiber optics serve as the main reasons why the Taipei City Government decided to collaborate with TAIFO, in the city government’s bid to become a model smart city.

BOT with Taipei City Government Ensure Stable Speed to Citizens

Though Taipei has been reputed as an exemplary metropolis of a developed country for many years, the city government has recently sought to further advance its status by transforming into a smart city. Following extensive research and selection among Taiwanese internet network candidates, the Taipei City Government landed on TAIFO as a partner, as a result of the company’s reputation, ethics and quality.

Unlike the majority of companies in the industry, who most often adopts the combination of traditional electric broadband cables with fiber optic cables to achieve results that imitates the abilities of full fiber optic networks, TAIFO only uses fiber optic cables to provide users with the full capacity of the technology. TAIFO itself also guarantees the quality of the cables it uses, as the company strictly selects from the cables manufactured by its own parent company.

The well-rounded Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) program that the company designed with Taipei was also a main reason why the company was selected, as a main clause of the agreement stipulated that the BOT project would last 25 years. Once the contract has been completed, the entire fiber optic infrastructure engineered by TAIFO would then be completely transferred to the city government.

As an example of the company’s expediency and technical prowess, TAIFO was able to provide fiber optic coverage to 20% of the 271.80 km2 city within 2 years since being granted the project. Following the completion of Phase 1, it only took TAIFO around a year to complete Phase 2, which increased the coverage to 60%. As of 2019, the company has already achieve close to 99% of its contracted infrastructure, seeking to provide the highest internet speed to the citizens of Taipei.

The BOT project between TAIFO and Taipei has greatly increased the bureaucracy efficiency of the city government. The best example could be seen in the elevated performance of the Taipei City Police Department. With high speed data transmission, TAIFO’s fiber optic network grants the government and the local police force accurate control and supervision on over more than 15,000 surveillance cameras placed throughout the city. Statistics between Taipei and the company have also displayed noticeable decrease in the city government’s spending. Furthermore, TAIFO has received multiple praises for the management of the fiber optic network. Most noticeably, as the company’s standard operating procedure dictates immediate response to power shortage, TAIFO handles around 50 cases a day so as to guarantee fast internet access recovery to all users.

According to the company, the current challenge that has stalled the organization’s progress to provide fiber optic network coverage to the entirety of the city, is only due to installation difficulties in districts located within higher altitudes as well as those that are situated at the border of other cities and counties. Furthermore, the new telecom law initiated by Taiwan’s federal government and the monopolization of Taiwan’s older telecom companies have proven to be business obstacles.

However, the company’s expertise in program design and management, along with the top quality cables from its parent company, places the company as one of the best fiber optic network solutions in Taiwan, if not the world. The company’s international repute even garnered the attention of the government of Manilla, Philippines, who approached TAIFO as a consultation team to help engineer the Filipino capital’s fiber optic network. The opportunity served as yet another reason why the company has absolute confidence in its products and also the reason why the organization believes that the difficulties it has thus faced are mere hurdles which TAIFO will eventually overcome.

Patented Wiring and Installation Technique Brings First Step to Elevation of National Etiquette, and Serves as a Revolutionary Approach for Developing Countries

2公分左右According to TAIFO, a common error practiced by the majority of local businesses which involves cable or wire installations, whether it be for electricity or for telecommunication purposes, is poor wiring management, and a disregard for the image of the national skyline.

To save time and increase profit, local companies would respond to wire and cable errors rashly by cutting corners. Companies would often write off simple issues as problems which demanded the replace of wires, without taking the effort to identify the faulty cables. As a result, newly installed wires would often get entangled with old ones both underground and aboveground, creating unpleasant looking skylines that would potentially damage the reputation of the neighborhood, and even the entire country.

In response to the problem, TAIFO has developed wiring techniques which tidily install wire and cables around the city without having to disrupt the image of the city skyline. TAIFO construction teams would slice a thin canal-like ditch that is only the size of the girth of any installing wire. After a cable is installed, construction teams would then wrap the wire in alloy, and then seal the canal with industrial rubber, leaving the entire project looking clean and neat.

Taking a look underground, local wires could be seen messily entangled in the sewage. To elevate the problem, TAIFO’s construction team would neatly install underground wires that would all be neatly organized into secure metal boxes locked onto the wall of a sewage. An official cover would then be installed on the surface of roads and streets so that maintenance crew could locate the wires with ease.

Both techniques are locally patented in Taiwan, with international patents in the process of application. Chang said that while TAIFO’s installation techniques are not necessary to developed countries such as Korea and Japan, it is potentially suitable to developing countries facing similar plights. Developing cities looking to simply organize city cables could use the technique to reorganize their wires in a tidy manner, presenting a more positive image to local citizens and international visitors alike.
