Leveraging AIoT to provide fresh air everywhere

Highlights

  • Highly accurate and compact iAeris Outdoor Air Quality Detector provides round-the-clock monitoring at Taiwan’s Hsinchu Industrial Park for the Environmental Protection Administration
  • iAeris devices leverage AIoT to activate air quality improvement systems automatically, enhancing travelers’ experience on the Taoyuan Airport MRT
  • Improves indoor air quality at Taipei Public Library Beitou Branch and lowers the risk of airborne disease contagion at museums and Hong Kong’s World Trade Centre

People are growing increasingly aware of the health risks posed to the human body by air pollution and have begun demanding better air quality. This has left governments worldwide facing the task of finding a smart city solution to monitor air quality and mitigate air pollution.

iAeris provides round-the-clock monitoring at Hsinchu Industrial Park

Sysinno Technology Inc. is one of the few companies in Taiwan focusing on air quality monitoring. It has developed iAeris, a compact and modular system with highly accurate data monitoring capabilities that incorporates state-of-the-art Artificial Internet of Things (AIoT) technology.

Due to the system’s high level of accuracy, Sysinno was selected by the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) to establish an automated air quality monitoring network. The firm has deployed more than 200 devices at Hukou Industrial Park and Hsinchu Science Park— both of which are considered areas with heavy air pollution.

The system provides round-the-clock monitoring of not only air quality, but also air pollutant emissions, PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations, and temperature and humidity levels. This data is uploaded directly to the EPA’s website and mobile applications, allowing members of the public to constantly monitor the air quality near them. The system also notifies the EPA of any sudden air pollutant emissions so that the agency can scramble an inspection team and fine offenders, effectively controlling air pollution by nipping it in the bud.

“To address rapid changes in the environment when establishing a smart city foundation and the need for specialized communication across different systems, we have elected to make the iAeris system modular so that it can be quickly attenuated to whatever special system is necessary,” Sysinno CEO Linch Lin (林春輝) said.

Due to its modularity and compact size, the system not only meets the EPA’s requirements, but it also helps resolve other problems the agency has: insufficient and poorly placed monitoring stations. Previously, monitoring stations were installed too far from suspected pollution sources and were unable to reflect actual pollution.

The system’s second-generation devices can also measure levels of total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide, aiding competent authorities with outdoor air quality monitoring.

AIoT helps improve indoor air quality for Taoyuan Airport MRT

Since it launched services in 2017, the Taoyuan Airport MRT — a metropolitan rail line linking Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport with Taipei — has become one of the most popular transportation methods to and from the airport, as well as all the stops in between. However, passengers have complained about foul smells when trains pass through industrial zones and areas with heavy traffic.

In response, the Taoyuan Department of Rapid Transit Systems has adopted a solution that employs iAeris — customized and calibrated for MRT cars. When the system detects that smells have exceeded a certain level, it triggers indoor air quality improvement systems automatically.

Applying smart technologies to a green library

The Taipei Public Library’s Beitou Branch is the first green library in Taiwan. It has become a tourist attraction not only because of the building’s unique appearance, but also the diverse ecology of the surrounding Beitou Park. However, visitors have complained about poor air quality.

Aside from referring to EPA statistics, the library used Sysinno’s products to conduct a comprehensive survey of air quality inside the library. This review examined data such as in which areas people are likely to congregate, as well as other factors that could affect indoor air quality.

Sysinno’s iAeris devices were installed in areas that had elicited the greatest number of complaints. In such areas, the system can be manually triggered by library staff who have been alerted to poor indoor air quality. In other parts of the library, the AIoT-enabled devices can automatically initiate processes to allow the intake of fresh air when necessary.

Adoption of the iAeris system has not only improved indoor air quality at the library, but also reduced its projected personnel costs related to such issues while balancing health with energy consumption.

Providing fresh air for art and reducing airborne contagion risks in large venues

The chemicals used to maintain and restore artwork emit volatile organic compounds, which at excessive levels can pose a hazard to human health. As such, museums constantly need to monitor the indoor air quality of areas where restoration and maintenance are carried out.

By deploying iAeris, museums can automatically determine whether residual chemicals in the air have reached levels at which they could damage artwork or prove harmful to people working in the facility.

Museums, art exhibition halls, exposition centers and shopping complexes are enclosed spaces that host large numbers of visitors — a situation highly conducive to the spread of airborne diseases. That is why many such facilities — both in Taiwan and abroad, including Hong Kong’s World Trade Centre — have contacted Sysinno to collaborate on ways to mitigate those risks.

Going forward, Sysinno remains committed to the research and development of AIoT and sensors. It is also looking to provide solutions on information security, which is always a concern in the technology industry, especially in AIoT systems.
