IOT Water Quality Monitoring System
- Automatically assesses the water quality of aquaculture pools and identifies water pollution issues
- Controls feeding portions and frequency, reducing costs and growth time
Water is an essential component of life needed by all types of organisms. Akubic International Co. Ltd. has focused its efforts on the development of a cloud-based smart water quality monitoring platform designed to assist aquaculture operators and help protect the environment.
Akubic’s latest offerings, the Outdoor Water Quality Monitoring System and the Cloud Micro Weather Station, are able to measure a number of water quality parameters. This data is sent to the cloud, where it is measured, recorded and analyzed, allowing for the generation of feedback and alerts. Both products provide monitoring of hydrological conditions and ensure proper control of water quality, helping aquaculture operators attain the government’s goal of maintaining a sustainable environment.
The Outdoor Water Quality Monitoring System is an updated version of Akubic’s popular Internet of Things (IoT) multiparameter water quality monitoring system. Through its combination of key technology and related sensors — powered by solar and wind energy generation modules — the system can integrate uncrewed aerial vehicle observation, underwater photography and automated feeding to facilitate real-time, smart aquaculture operations.
The solar-powered Cloud Micro Weather Station gathers atmospheric data for the surrounding area. It constantly measures and monitors temperature, precipitation, wind direction, air pressure and moisture level, with the data transmitted to the cloud via a Wi-Fi connection. This allows farmers to obtain accurate weather information as needed.
Intelligent, real-time water quality analysis provides invaluable insights while reducing costs
The Fisheries Research Institute worked with Akubic International to install an Outdoor Water Quality Monitoring System at its Mariculture Research Center, where it is facilitating control and stability of the local environment, reducing management costs, lowering risks and increasing profitability.
The Outdoor Water Quality Monitoring System is capable of recording the cultivation process and analyzing water quality in real time, Akubic International CEO Scott Ko said.
In addition, the integration of peripheral equipment with the cloud-based system enables full remote control and monitoring of all conditions, he said.
In aquaculture, it is important that operators understand the water conditions at all times, as bacteria and viruses can easily take root and thrive when the water quality changes, he added.
Compared with traditional methods of water testing, the Water Quality Monitoring System not only conserves time and reduces personnel requirements, but it also provides data that more accurately reflects conditions in breeding ponds. In addition, it also allows for feeding to take place more frequently, which can help reduce harvest time.
Adoption in Taiwan builds a foundation for overseas success
Aside from working with the Fisheries Research Institute, Akubic International has also collaborated with the Taipei City Government on conducting water quality monitoring of several bodies of water in the city’s public areas, such as Bitan and Zhongzheng Riverside Park.
The Water Quality Monitoring System keeps an eye on aspects such as water pH, capacity and pollution. The system has also been successfully deployed in Tainan and Kaohsiung, as well as Yunlin and Pingtung counties.
Companies that have adopted the Akubic International’s Water Quality Monitoring System have said that it accurately controls feeding portions and frequency, effectively reducing feed costs by 15 percent and cutting growth time by one-third.
In addition to the system’s successful adoption in Taiwan, Akubic International has also assisted aquaculture operators in Japan and hopes to expand its overseas markets.
