The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), the US representative office in Taiwan in the absence of formal relations, will hold the 2018 Fishackathon next month in Taipei and Kaohsiung to promote marine conservation.
The event, to take place February 3-4, is aimed to draw together coders and science enthusiasts to work on solutions for more sustainable fishing and aquaculture, according to AIT.
The Fishackathon is a partnership between the U.S. Department of State and HackerNest, a nonprofit organization and movement that builds local tech communities worldwide, it noted.
Together with events held in dozens of cities around the world, Fishackathon Taipei and Kaohsiung challenges technologists to help identify issues facing our oceans, fish, and fisheries and to develop mobile and technological solutions to these real-world problems.
Teams can win various local prizes and the top team from each city will move forward to compete for the global grand prize, AIT said.
According to AIT, Fishackathon Taipei will take place at StarRocket of the Syntrend Creative Park. Other local partners include Foundation for Women’s Rights Promotion and Development, IBM Taiwan, iThome, Intel, Microsoft Taiwan, National Geographic Magazine Taiwan, the Institute of Marine Affairs and Resource Management of National Taiwan Ocean University, the Institute of Oceanography of National Taiwan University, Ocean Says, and Taiwan Design Center.
