Sowers Action’s Charity Golf Tournament 2019 has ended successfully at the Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club in Sai Kung, Hong Kong, with the organizer raising more than HK$700,000 (NT$2.7 million) for underprivileged children of developing areas in need of education and care.
More than 150 participants took part in the annual event held last Friday by the Sowers Action’s Tournament Organizing Committee 2019 — the sixth since 2014. Hong Kong’s popular TV actor-host Patrick Dunn, and famous chef and chairman of Dragon King Restaurant Group Stefano Wong Wing-chee (Chee Gor) once again served as the Event Ambassador and Charity Ambassador, respectively.
Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club Chairman Huen Wong BBS JP, the two events ambassadors — Dunn and Wong — and Sowers Action Board of Directors — Volunteer Chairman Albert Ho, jointly teed off to officially start the charity tournament, according to the organizer.
The golf games ended smoothly before the rain started with the organizer adding a new prize — “Hole-in-One” insurance of up to HK$100,000 to foot the event F&B expenses so that the amount saved can go to the donation pool, the organizer said.
There were also “Love Stroke on Green” — one stroke on the green — and “Beat the Pro Challenge” which created much fun to the event, it noted.
In addition to the philanthropists who showed their enthusiasm in supporting Sowers Action’s goal — that all children deserve a chance to learn, showbiz personalities and celebrities including Bob Lam Chi Pok, Gilbert Lam Wai-san, and Cindy Lee Si-nga also took part in the event to offer their support for Sowers Action’s goal, according to the organizer.
After the tournament, a fun and enjoyable evening with live music, fortune telling, stall games, charity sales, live auction, and the lucky draw were held while guests had chances to bring home famous wine, mouth-watering banquet coupon, golf vouchers, holiday resort package, and etc.
Bob Lam, who was the evening event’s special guest, even worked with the committee’s music sponsor, OMG Band, by performing a few songs to indulge all guests and participants with the beats and rhythms, the organizer said.
“With a thankful heart, we have again received great support from sponsors, golfers, guests, and volunteers from various sectors this year,” said Stella Lo, convenor of Sowers Action’s Tournament Organizing Committee 2019.
Some of those people have supported the event since the first tournament in 2014, she said, adding it was also encouraging to see old friends and new faces gathering at this world-class golf course again, joining hands to raise fund for the underprivileged children in developing countries.
Founded in 1992, Sowers Action — a non-religious, non-political and non-profit charitable organization based in Hong Kong — has been committed to promoting child welfare and equal access to education for socially vulnerable groups in all parts of the world.
Formed by volunteers devoted to promoting education in the poverty area, it has constructed 1,811 schools, subsidized 309,000 students, trained up to 31,000 teachers and operated three children’s homes. As the end of 2018, its educational footprints have covered China (16 provinces), Hong Kong, Myanmar and north of Thailand with a total of over HK$630 million subsidies and 500,000 beneficiaries.
