Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, is a fast-growing city that is home to more than 10 million people, making it the second-most populous urban area after Tokyo. Providing services for such a large population has placed massive burdens — including financial and administrative — on the local government.

In 2014, the Jakarta City Government established a blueprint for the transformation of the metropolitan area into an intelligent, low-carbon footprint city. Local officials identified smart LED streetlights as the primary foundation upon which to undertake this urban transformation.
Thanks to significantly greater energy efficiency than other lighting solutions, LEDs consume far less electricity. This results not only in greatly lowered electricity costs — particularly when deployed in the massive quantities needed by municipalities — but also a smaller carbon footprint for the city as a whole. In addition, because they cause less strain on the power grid, LEDs can be deployed far more liberally, creating a brighter and safer environment for residents.

Leveraging expertise and professionalism to lay the foundation for a successful project
Delta Electronics Inc. is a global leader in power and thermal management solutions. It has been developing smart streetlight solutions since 2010 and is one of the top suppliers in Taiwan. To date, the company has installed more than 600,000 of its streetlights.

In 2017, Delta began collaborating with a local partner network to provide and install 21,000 smart streetlights in East Jakarta, in areas such as Metland, Pulo Gadung and the East Flood Canal side road.

As part of a more-than-two-year process to confirm product specifications and verify the production process, Delta sent teams to Indonesia to explain the product’s features and demonstrate the firm’s capabilities, and provided the city government with hardware for installation tests. In addition, it invited local officials to visit its research and development team in Taiwan and to see firsthand the production process.

After securing its first international own-brand streetlight project, Delta and its local partner spent more than three months carefully conducting site surveys, inspecting warehouses and confirming the installation plan before officially beginning execution.

LED streetlights provide cleaner lighting with less energy consumption
In line with the energy-saving objectives of the Jakarta City Government, Delta’s LED streetlights consume 48 percent less electricity than their traditional high-pressure sodium predecessors and are about 70 percent more energy-efficient than mercury-vapor lamps.

In addition to energy savings, Delta’s LED streetlights offer inherently superior color rendition than either of the older technologies. This means that not only are the new streetlights just as bright — if not brighter — than earlier versions, they provide better color vision at night for the city’s residents.

Centralized management platform provides real-time data, lowers maintenance costs and improves satisfaction
Delta provided the Jakarta City Government with a centralized management platform for the streetlights that can also be fully integrated with other systems. This platform allows city officials to monitor the energy consumption, brightness and maintenance needs of each smart streetlight.
In addition to real-time monitoring of the conditions of each streetlight, Delta’s platform allows city officials to remotely control individual units. As LEDs provide operators more granular control of their output, the brightness — and, by extension, power consumption — of each streetlight can be tailored to changing circumstances.

Servicing a network of tens of thousands of streetlights can be a daunting challenge, but the platform features automation to reduce maintenance costs. For example, if a unit requires service, the system can immediately notify and dispatch personnel to conduct repairs. This obviates the need for staff to patrol the city’s streets in search of broken hardware and increases the system’s overall uptime, boosting safety and the satisfaction of residents.

Wireless connectivity provides backbone for smart city, IoT solutions
Thanks to integrated wireless connectivity, Delta’s smart LED streetlights can do more than just light up the streets for Jakarta’s residents. In addition to providing an interface to transmit data for the back-end management platform, wireless networking technology transforms the densely packed streetlights into the communications backbone for smart city integration projects.

Delta’s smart LED streetlights not only increase the brightness and safety of Jakarta’s streets, but also provide a platform for other applications. Due to their wireless networking capabilities, the streetlights can also be used for Internet of Things (IoT) applications, such as providing remote sensing of air quality, temperature and water levels, and serve as information displays.

As streetlights tower above city streets, they provide a naturally advantageous vantage point for surveillance equipment. In addition, because they are already integrated into the city’s power grid, Delta’s smart LED streetlights can optionally serve as charging stations for electric vehicles.

Energy storage systems safeguard power
for smart cities

Amid the growing challenges the world faces due to climate change, the public’s attention has increasingly shifted towards technological solutions aimed at reducing humanity’s collective carbon footprint. While sectors such as intelligent homes often receive the largest share of the limelight, the regulation of power at its source remains just as important — if not more — to the energy transformation underpinning smart cities.
