The 38th “Taiwan Fashion Design Award” has unveiled its preliminary results, revealing unparalleled creativity and prowess from 542 aspiring designers hailing from 23 countries and regions. This year’s competition was scrutinized by an international panel of fashion experts, including Tomonori Matsui, founder of One-O Fashion PR in Japan; veteran designer Dai Fujiwara; DOUCHANGLEE Creative Director Stephane Dou; Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Fashion Director Stephanie Kuo; Hearst Taiwan CEO Ellen Yang; and Charlotte Chiang, Design Department Director of the Taiwan Textile Federation, who collectively selected 12 exceptional designs to advance to the finals.
This edition has attracted participants from countries like the UK, France, the USA, and Japan, marking the highest number of participants and participating countries in the competition’s history. The entries drew inspiration from a diverse range of themes, from red-light district cultures and the flora of four seasons to original illustrated books and self-created magical worlds. Other inspirations include the film “Poor Things,” which explores themes of inner awakening, as well as bioluminescent jellyfish in the deep sea guiding the lost—each reflecting deep insights into history and culture and expressing unique future perspectives.
In terms of design, these entries cleverly combined functionality with sustainability. For instance, they featured adjustable designs and detachable functions, and incorporated large pocket designs for ample storage, blending practicality with aesthetics. Digital printing technologies were utilized to minimize environmental impacts. The choice of materials was notably innovative, including the use of natural dyes, handmade fabrics, upcycled textiles, and recycled denim, enhancing the garments’ durability and aesthetic appeal while showcasing the designers’ ongoing commitment to environmental concerns.
The judges commented, “We particularly valued the balance of style, the innovation in cuts, and the novelty. The uniqueness of the colors, prints, and textiles was impressive. In this competition, ethnic styles were less pronounced, while commercial applications were more prominent, significantly enhancing the market impact of these works. We look forward to seeing more complete and mature creative works in the finals.”
