Smart photovoltaic aquaculture systems
- Floating photovoltaic system generates energy while stabilizing water temperature in breeding pools
- Collaboration with the Fisheries Research Institute in experiments helped farmed clams maintain growth rate

Sunny Rich Power Co. is committed to helping the aquaculture industry open a window of hope to create a win-win situation. Pollution and climate change have always been a nightmare for the aquaculture industry. Sunny Rich Power’s smart agriculture and environmental monitoring system allows fishermen to maintain a stable income through long-term management and encourages young people to return home to support and be a part of the industry by providing a better work environment.
Sunny Rich Power has also developed a floating photovoltaic system featuring high sunlight transmission, an increased air gap and better air circulation. The floating structure occupies a low ratio of water surface, with limited interference to water flow.
Sunny Rich Power’s innovations will help improve fish farming conditions and reorganize the agriculture industry along the entirety of Taiwan’s western coast. These solutions will improve the lives of farmers and fishermen by reviving declining and dying west coast aquaculture and agricultural communities, creating prosperity.
Photovoltaic system assists research institutes, enhances fish farming facilities and helps solve problems while increasing revenue
The Council of Agriculture’s Fisheries Research Institute has verified the benefits of improving management, and combining aquaculture and solar power generation in clam farming. Sunny Rich Power was selected to conduct a breeding experiment with the floating photovoltaic system, which simulated a 40 percent occlusion rate, and conduct a water quality comparison.
The final results showed that the breeding pond equipped with the system maintained relatively stable water quality. This not only reduces the effects of temperature changes on pond water, but also provides a stable environment for aquaculture development.
During the summer, direct sunlight exposure causes a high water temperature, but the system’s 40 percent occlusion rate helped to reduce water and soil temperature at the bottom of the pond, which increased the clam’s growth rate. In the autumn and winter, when there is only a short period of sunlight each day, low water temperatures typically cause the growth rate to slow due to insufficient food supply, but, with this system, clams maintain a 70 percent growth rate. As for the clam’s food supply, experiments on controlling the supply in low temperatures are still underway.
The Fisheries Research Institute also collaborated with Sunny Rich Power to conduct experiments on four 0.5-hectare test ponds at its Mariculture Research Center’s Taishi branch in Yunlin County, where they set up pole-type photovoltaic systems with different shielding rates. In addition to participating in green energy generation, which can help increase income, with further planning and monitoring, rainwater collection equipment can optimize clam cultivation, helping provide stable revenue for fishermen.
Chen Kuei-kuang, chairman of Sunny Rich Power, pointed out that the biggest problem farmers face today are issues caused by extreme weather. The use of advanced technology can revolutionize agriculture, such as remote control of environmental conditions on farms. Through its equipment designed to solve specific problems, Sunny Rich Power meets the requirements of the government and the expectations of fishermen. The company is dedicated to research and development, practical cultivation, the promotion of fisheries and using the symbiosis between fisheries and solar energy to achieve the optimal results.
Expanding beyond collaboration with domestic research institutions and enterprises
Chen said that there are many countries which are suitable for aquaculture, whose water quality and oxygen content are not affected by the environment. In addition, applications combining solar power generation with fisheries have been successfully deployed by many Taiwanese companies, as well as in industry-academia cooperation, including projects by National Taiwan University and National Cheng Kung University. In the future, in addition to cooperation with domestic fishery research units and enterprises, Sunny Rich Power plans to expand to overseas markets.
